Pale pink ribbed cotton ankle socks. Light, soft, the kind of pink that looks delicate until it's been on my feet for a full day. Cotton this pale stains the way skin bruises. Slowly at first, then all at once. The weave darkens at the sole, discolours at the toes, picks up every surface I walk across and wears the evidence openly.
I wear these all day. The thin knit sits close to my skin and absorbs fast. There's no thick pile to diffuse anything, no dark dye to cover what's happening. Just pale cotton pressed flat against my feet doing exactly what cotton does. Soaking. Holding. Keeping everything locked into the fibres where it stays.
The sole darkens first. Then the toe seam. Then the heel. By the end of the day the pink is still there but it's sharing the fabric with everything else that's built up underneath it. Pale colours are honest and these are no exception.
